TL;DR
Three decisions decide your first month. One: take Verina from the Beginner’s Choice Convene — she is the best support in the game and the limited banners will never give her to you. Two: spend all 240 Waveplates every single day; overflow is the only resource in this game you can lose permanently. Three: do not level a single Echo until your Data Bank is in the mid-teens, because the Tuners you burn on green Echoes are the Tuners you need for gold ones.
Everything else is recoverable.
What the game doesn’t tell you
Wuthering Waves hands you a flashy combat system and a huge open world, then quietly runs two economies underneath it that the tutorial barely mentions.
The first is Union Level. It is not cosmetic. It gates your Resonator level cap, your weapon level cap, your Data Bank cap and your access to the content that drops upgrade materials. A new player who wanders off to explore for ten hours ends up at Union Level 12 with characters hard-capped at level 40 and no idea why nothing is getting stronger. The main quest is the fastest Union EXP in the game by a long way. Do the story, then explore.
The second is the Echo system, and it is where new accounts lose the most. Echoes are your artifacts: you defeat a monster, absorb it, equip it. The catch is the Data Bank. Every new Echo type you scan raises it, and the Data Bank level controls the quality of the Echo drops you get from Tacet Fields. Low Data Bank means green and blue Echoes. Levelling those costs Tuners and Shell Credits that you cannot farm back quickly. The community rule is blunt and correct: collect Echoes early, level them late.
The third thing nobody warns you about: the game does not punish you for skipping content, but it punishes you hard for skipping days. Waveplates cap at 240 and refill at 1 per 6 minutes. If you log off with a full bar, you stop earning. Two minutes of claiming is worth more than two hours of exploring.
The steps, explained
Why the main quest comes first
The Prologue and Act I are not optional content you can come back to. They unlock Tacet Fields (your Echo farm), Forgery Challenges (weapon and skill materials), Simulation Training (Shell Credits and character EXP) and the weekly bosses. Until those exist, your Waveplates have nowhere good to go. Push the story until the systems menu stops showing padlocks.
Why you claim the Novice pulls immediately
The Novice Convene is a one-time 50-pull banner that guarantees a 5-star somewhere in those 50, with its own isolated pity. There is no scenario in which saving it helps you — it does not share a counter with the limited banner, and the 5-star you get is from the standard pool either way. Finish it in your first session.
Why Verina and nothing else
Completing the Novice banner unlocks the Beginner’s Choice Convene: you pick one of five standard-pool 5-stars — Verina, Jianxin, Calcharo, Encore or Lingyang — and it is guaranteed within 80 pulls.
Take Verina. Not because she does the most damage, but because of what she is: a healer who also buffs the team’s attack and can revive. That combination fits every team composition that exists and every team composition that will exist. More importantly, she lives in the standard pool, which means limited banners will never feature her. Calcharo and Jianxin are good units, but a new account cannot gear them properly for weeks, and the limited banners will hand you a better main DPS inside a month. Verina is the only pick here that you cannot get another way.
Lingyang is the trap option. He looks spectacular and he is the weakest long-term choice on the list.
Why only four Resonators
At Union Level 20 your ascension material income supports about four characters at the cap. Spreading it over seven gives you seven characters too weak for anything. Build Rover (your free Spectro main, genuinely strong and free), Verina, Baizhi as a second healer or sustain filler, and one free DPS — Chixia is the simple, reliable pick. If a login campaign has given you Sanhua, build her instead as your quick-swap damage.
Why Waveplate discipline beats everything
240 Waveplates a day, 1 every 6 minutes, hard cap. A Tacet Field run costs 60. A weekly boss costs 60. Overflow is pure loss. Plan it like this: while you are below Union Level 30, push Waveplates into ascension materials (Forgery Challenges and field bosses) and skill materials. Echo farming can wait. That ordering is not a preference, it is the difference between a team that clears content and a team with perfect gear it is too underlevelled to use.
Why the Data Bank gate is real
Scan everything. Every new Echo type you pick up in the open world raises the Data Bank, and the Data Bank is the only thing standing between you and reliable gold Echo drops. Until you are comfortably into the mid-teens, equip whatever Echoes you find as placeholders at level 0 and spend nothing on them. The set bonus from unlevelled Echoes still works. The stats do not matter yet.
What not to spend
Astrite on the standard banner. Ever. The standard pool is where Lustrous Tides go, and you get Lustrous Tides free from events, exploration milestones and Union Level rewards. Spending 160 Astrite to pull a character you will eventually be handed is the most expensive mistake available to a new account.
Astrite on Waveplate refreshes. The price escalates within a single day and the material you were short of will be sitting in your inventory a week later anyway. 160 Astrite is one pull toward a character you keep forever.
Tuners on green or blue Echoes. This is the one that quietly ruins accounts. Tuners are the Echo levelling currency and they are tight for months. Levelling a blue Echo to 15 feels productive and is a complete write-off the moment your Data Bank starts producing gold.
Shell Credits on talents for characters you will bench. Forte (skill) levels are expensive in Shell Credits and skill materials. Level the Forte tree for your single main DPS and your healer. Leave everyone else at base.
Weapon Convene pulls. The weapon banner guarantees the featured weapon, which sounds great and is a trap on a free account. A 4-star weapon at high refinement does 80–90% of the job of a signature 5-star. Your Astrite buys characters. Characters are the units you cannot substitute.
The one thing you genuinely cannot waste: exploration chests, Astrite from Statues, and puzzle rewards. Those are capped by the map, not by time. If you are short on pulls, open-world completion is where the pulls are hiding.
Starter tier list
The rankings in the frontmatter are built on what a free account can actually reach in week one, not on endgame damage ceilings.
S — Verina. Universal. The only unit on this list that is strictly unavailable through limited banners, which makes the selector the one chance you get at her.
A — Calcharo, Jianxin, Encore. All three are real units with real teams. All three are worse first picks than Verina because they compete with the limited DPS you will pull within a month, and because they need Echo sets a new account does not have. Take one on a second playthrough, not your first.
B — Rover, Baizhi, Yangyang, Chixia, Sanhua. The free roster. These clear every piece of early and mid content. Rover in particular is a legitimately good main DPS you will keep using long after week one.
C — Lingyang, Yuanwu, Taoqi. Lingyang is the Beginner’s Choice option to avoid. Yuanwu and Taoqi are shield and support units with narrow use cases that do not help a beginner team.
A tier list is a snapshot. This one reflects the roster at the time of writing, and new 4-star supports and healers change the B tier every few versions. Treat S as stable and everything below it as provisional.
Your first week, day by day
Day 1. Main quest until Tacet Fields and Simulation Training unlock. Finish all 50 Novice pulls. Claim Beginner’s Choice and select Verina. Spend the day’s Waveplates on ascension materials.
Day 2. Keep pushing the main quest. Start the daily activity list — it is a few minutes and it feeds Union EXP and Astrite. Unlock the first field bosses and farm the drops your main DPS needs.
Day 3. Open-world sweep: Statues of the Seven equivalents, chests, Echo scans. This is your pull income. Target Union Level 20 and ascend your four Resonators.
Day 4. Unlock the weekly bosses and run one. Start Forte levels on your main DPS only. Finish Simulation Training for Shell Credits.
Day 5. Echo set hunting begins — not levelling, hunting. Equip the right set bonuses at level 0 and keep scanning new types.
Day 6. Tower of Adversity. Clear what your team can handle and stop. The Astrite from partial clears is still the best repeatable source on a free account.
Day 7. Audit the account: Union Level 25–30, four capped Resonators, main DPS at Forte 6+, Waveplates spent every day, Astrite untouched except for the Novice banner. If that is where you are, you are ahead of where most week-one accounts land.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wuthering Waves playable without spending money?
Yes, fully. Every mode including Tower of Adversity is clearable on a free account. The limited character banner guarantees the featured 5-star within 160 pulls worst case, and a free account that logs in daily accumulates pulls fast enough for roughly one limited 5-star per patch cycle.
Should I reroll my account?
No. The Novice Convene guarantees a 5-star within 50 pulls and the Beginner's Choice selector guarantees Verina. There is nothing a reroll gets you that patience does not, and you would throw away the Union EXP you already earned.
Why are my characters stuck at level 20?
Ascension. Each ascension needs boss drops plus a Union Level threshold. Raise Union Level through the main quest and daily activities, then ascend. The cap is an account-wide gate, not a character problem.
Can I spend Astrite to refresh Waveplates?
You can, and you should not. The refresh price climbs every time you use it in a day, and 160 Astrite is one pull. Material shortages fix themselves in a week; a missing 5-star does not.
Does pity carry over between banners?
Yes, between limited character banners. Your pull count and your guarantee both follow you to the next featured Resonator, so stopping at 60 pulls on a banner you do not finish is not wasted. The Novice and Beginner's Choice banners have their own separate pity.
